ASHREA 90.1-2022: Changes to Session 722 Commercial Energy Efficiency                        Session 722

This session tracks the significant changes across the 2019, 2022, and into 2025 editions of the commercial energy standard, giving attendees a working understanding of what changed, why it changed, and what it means for the projects crossing their desks. The class walks the standard section by section — building envelope, HVAC, service water heating, power and lighting — and addresses the compliance pathways available under each edition, from prescriptive criteria through the envelope trade-off, Energy Cost Budget, and Performance Rating Method options. Particular attention is paid to how the standard is organized, when its appendices are enforceable and when they are informative, and where 90.1 diverges from the IECC in ways that change what a plans examiner should require and what an inspector should verify in the field.

Instructor:    Troy Jones      Troy is an educator with the Sustainability & Energy Division at Shums Coda Associates, where he supports professionals in understanding and applying modern building-performance, energy-efficiency, and sustainability standards. He brings a practical, field-focused approach to instruction—translating complex code requirements into clear, actionable guidance for inspectors, plans examiners, and design teams. Troy’s work emphasizes accessible learning, consistent technical accuracy, and real-world application, helping jurisdictions strengthen their capacity to deliver safe, efficient, and resilient buildings.
