Track 2 | 10K Lakes ICC Chapter

Alternative Means and Methods                                                       Session 712

This session reviews the use of the alternate materials and methods requirements of the codes. Every code is a minimum standard written in prescriptive language, and every code also grants the building official authority to approve materials, designs, and methods of construction it never anticipated — provided the alternate is shown to satisfy the intent of the provision it replaces. This seminar covers how that authority works: reading and applying evaluation reports, evaluating the materials and systems most commonly submitted as alternates, working with referenced standards and performance-based design when no report exists, and building a defensible submittal and approval process that maintains minimum requirements for building and occupant safety. Attendees will review the use of ICC evaluation reports when applying the International Building Code.
