With a musical culture passed down over centuries and a thriving film industry, opportunities for artists and musicians in Pakistan's capital of Lahore were great when the country achieve independence in 1947. Islamization, ethnic divisions, war and corruption have torn apart the cultural fabric of Pakistan, and the sounds of the tabla no longer drift through the old city's bazaar.
The Sachal Jazz Ensemble formed in 2004 at the abandoned Sachal Film Studio. After convincing a number of master musicians to pick up their instruments again, they quietly released some classical and folk albums. An experimental album fusing jazz and South Asian instruments brought them worldwide acclaim; their take on Dave Brubeck's Take Five became a sensation, and Wynton Marsalis invited them to New York to perform with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Despite their rising international acclaim, the Sachal Jazz Ensemble remains virtually unknown in Pakistan.
