Lee Chandler (Affleck) is a loner and the resident handyman for a Boston apartment block. He receives news that his brother has died suddenly and that he's been named guardian to his 16-year-old nephew. As if losing his only sibling and having doubts about raising a teenager weren't enought, the return to his hometown re-opens an unspeakable tragedy. The director has created a world so messy that feelings of grief, love, anger, tenderness and brittle humour swirl about the characters in this very human story.
