This gritty story begins in late 1980s Miami, in a neglected neighbourhood in the throes of a crack epidemic. If follows Chiron as he navigates the dangers of homophobia, drugs and violence. Chiron is bullied at school and beaten down by a harsh home life. Moonlight takes him from childhood to adulthood, in three acts, offering insights into the contemporary African-American experience. The film explores the human need to feel connected in order to heal psychological wounds.
