The Great Speckled Bird, Atlanta's renowned underground newspaper of the late '60s and early '70s, earned a reputation as one of the best -- perhaps the best -- of several hundred similar papers in that era. CBS's "Sixty Minutes" and Mike Wallace featured the Bird in a 1971 segment on the phenomenon of underground papers. The Bird's first issue appeared March 15, 1968.
