The American Drama Group Europe has created an exciting new production of one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, Macbeth.  The group has toured to over twenty countries on three continents, in venues from a plantation house in Atlanta to Windsor Castle, from major theatres in Tokyo and Berlin, to palaces in Verona and Stockholm.  More locally, they have performed throughout Switzerland, including at the Château de Chillon.

They have agreed to perform Macbeth for one night only at ISL. This is an excellent chance for students to see one of the set texts from the English curriculum brought to life, and more broadly for our students to see high quality contemporary theatre without having to travel farther than school.

The producer writes:

If Macbeth is not the finest play ever written, it is certainly the most performed. The play explores the corruption of power and its terrifying results, both politically and personally. But, while the themes are profound and complex, the form is hugely entertaining: this is a thriller, a war story, a romance, a nightmare, a horror story, and a powerful presentation of the supernatural.

TNT’s production, directed by Paul Stebbings, has been so successful that it has been constantly revived and toured worldwide since 2001. This is a full blooded version of the play: not frightened of the supernatural and not compromised by modern dress. But it is not an old-fashioned production: the musical score drives the play forward and creates a compelling sound texture and the acting is fast and physical.

“From the very first moment of this Macbeth, the audience was held in a vice-like grip” - Japan Times

“World class theatre” – The Observer

Please note: all Years 9 to 11 students need not book tickets as they have seats already reserved – we expect all these students to attend.

Refreshments, including drinks, hot dogs and baked goods will served before the performance and during the interval in aid of Cecily’s Fund – a grass-roots charitable foundation that supports and educates vulnerable children in Kitwe, Zambia.

Please contact Mr Lloyd (jlloyd@isl.ch) if you have any questions.  We are looking forward to an engaging interpretation of this entertaining tragedy.
