“The 52nd Annual Freedom Gala & Awards is taking place 50 years after the 1968 assasination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which produced riots in 125 cities throughout the U.S., and within 7 days 46 people were killed, an estimated 35,000 were injured. Meanwhile, Reverend Lyman Parks, was elected as third-ward commissioner, and first African American in Grand Rapids to serve in that position . This year’s theme - Evolution: The Come Back - a tribute to our accomplishments that we have made thus far, proceeding Dr. Martin Luther King's death. Dr. King created the blueprint for us and it is our duty to evolve from where he left off, celebrating his spirit of excellence, in the most heritable way. On this 52nd anniversary of the NAACP Greater Grand Rapids Branch Freedom Fund Gala, we affirm it is time for Evolution: The Comeback!”
