Faith Talamantez presents
How to Say Bowl in Spanish
Directed by Miranda Guzman-Shrake
May 24, 2025
How to Say Bowl in Spanish is a new play being produced thanks to the M. Garren Tinney Writing fellowship, awarded to author Faith Talamantez by UC Santa Barbara's Writing Department. Set in 2017 during Donald Trump’s first presidency, the play follows high school senior Maria and her family throughout the school year. As the daughter of a Mexican dad and a white mom, Maria’s identity comes under fire when she has to take a Spanish class and learn her mother tongue for the first time. Stuck in a class with an unsupportive teacher and all non-Hispanic peers, Maria’s frustration only grows, causing fourth wall breaks during which Maria is forced to perform her suffering for an audience. While her Mexican father gets stuck across the border as regulations tighten, Maria and her white mom are left to deal with the hard questions of privilege and identity while Maria finishes the school year.
